Calderone Named Tournament Outstanding Wrestler at Super Regional

ERIE, Pa. – Following his victory at the NCAA Division II Super Region Championship, graduate student wrestler Joe Calderone was named the Tournament Outstanding Wrestler at the Super Region I Championship as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday, March 5.

The Huntington Station native has had another outstanding season on the mat for the Pioneers, compiling a 20-2 overall record and a 13-2 mark in duels. Calderone took first place in the 141-pound weight class at The Wildcat Open hosted by Johnson & Wales University and took the title at the Super Regional to clinch a spot in the NCAA Championship for the fourth time during his career. He began the season as the No. 1 ranked wrestler in Division II at 141, and ranked No. 3 nationally in the most recent rankings.

During the Super Regional run, Calderone defeated No. 2-ranked Joey Allesandro (Pitt-Johnstown) by pinfall during the third period. Allesandro was the lone Division II grappler to defeat Calderone this season, earning a 4-0 decision win during a duel on Jan. 26.

The postseason honor for Calderone is one of many on his collegiate resume, adding to four NCAA championship qualifications, two All-America accolades, and the LIU Post Male Athlete of the Year during the 2017-18 academic year.

Calderone is seeking to become LIU Post's second national champion this weekend at the NCAA Division II Championship in Cleveland, Ohio. Calderone can also become the second three-time All-American in program history.
