TAMPA, Fla. – In the second game of its series against the second-ranked University of Tampa, the LIU Post baseball team suffered a 9-2 setback Saturday afternoon at the University of Tampa Baseball Field in a contest highlighted by sophomore
Christopher Wasson going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Along with Wasson's 2-for-4, two-RBI outing, senior
Anthony Vaglica had two hits and seniors
Sal Geraci and
Jimmy Mendyk both added one hit and one run for the Pioneers.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first then building their lead to 6-0 by the bottom of the fifth.
LIU Post ended the top of the sixth with the bases loaded; Mendyk led off and was hit by a pitch, senior
Dave Brehm reached on a fielders' choice and Wasson followed with a single through the right side. Vaglica then singled through the left side, Wasson advanced to second and Brehm advanced to third but Tampa managed to keep the Pioneers scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth.
By the bottom of the seventh Tampa had expanded its lead to 8-0 but the Pioneers showed resilience down the stretch. Leading off in the top of the eighth, Mendyk advanced to second after a Spartan throwing error then advanced to third after Geraci singled to left field. Wasson then doubled to left center and Geraci and Mendyk scored. Vaglica followed with a single to left field that advanced Wasson to third but Tampa managed to prevent the Pioneers from scoring for the remainder of the game and out hold out for the 9-2 victory.
