TAMPA, Fla. – Playing its final game of a three-game series against the second-ranked University of Tampa, the LIU Post baseball team fell 9-0 Sunday afternoon at the University of Tampa Baseball Field.
The Pioneers recorded six hits, the most they have recorded in a game throughout the series. Senior
Dave Brehm went 2-for-4 while sophomore
Christopher Wasson, senior
Michael Manzione, senior
Jimmy Mendyk and freshman
David Franchi each recorded one hit.
Wasson continued his strong start to the season with a single to left field in the top of the first. He was then caught stealing with Manzione at bat. Wasson was then involved in a double play in the bottom of the second after throwing to freshman
David Franchi at second base who then relayed the ball to junior
Zach Fritz at first.
The top of the third saw Mendyk single to right field and Brehm follow with a single to left field. While Wasson then reached on a fielder's choice, Brehm was out at second. Tampa ended the third inning grounding into another Pioneer double play.
Tampa showed why they are the second-ranked team in the nation in the bottom of the fourth as they put five runs on the scoreboard.
Brehm led off the top of the sixth with a single to left field and Wasson followed by drawing a walk. Vaglica was then out on a fielder's choice that saw Wasson advance to second and Brehm to third. The Spartans managed to prevent the Pioneers from scoring for the remainder of the inning then add another two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Franchi recorded his first collegiate hit as he singled up in the middle in the top of the eighth but Tampa did not concede a run for the rest of the contest, adding another two of their own in the bottom of the eighth to take the win 9-0.
