BRISTOL, R.I. – LIU Post took five bouts against Roger Williams University in a dual match at the RWU Campus Rec Center on Saturday, Jan. 26, but ultimately came up short by a 23-20 final in a tune-up before the Wildcat Open.
The Pioneers opened the match with three consecutive victories during with freshman
Brandon Mercado garnering six points by injury default at 125. Freshman
Jacob Zuller added a 3-2 decision victory at 133 and graduate student
Joe Calderone earned a 9-4 victory at 141 to put LIU Post ahead, 12-0.
Roger Williams stormed back on the scoreboard during the next three bouts, beginning with a five-point technical fall at 149 before receiving six points for a forfeit in the 157-pound bout. Michael Mirimina capped off the scoring run with a narrow 7-5 decision against freshman
Kenny Cooper at 165 to give the Hawks a 14-12 advantage midway through the match.
Senior
Dan Arkow put LIU Post back on top with a four-point victory against Taylor Shay at 174 and junior
Dan McClure put the Green and Gold ahead by six points with his own four-point victory at 184 against Brett Leonard. Roger Williams bounced back with an 8-1 decision victory at 197 to stay alive heading into the heavyweight bout.
The final bout was low scoring through the first two periods before Adam Patsun earned a takedown during the third period and finished off the match with a pinfall at the six-minute mark of the bout to help the Hawks come from behind for the 23-20 final.
LIU Post returns to the mat tomorrow morning at the Wildcat Open at 9:30 a.m.
