BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU Post stormed back late in game one and freshman
Patricia Dun smacked her first career home run for the only run in game two as the Pioneer softball team split with the University of Bridgeport April 14.
Dun finished 2-for-6 at the plate with the solo shot and two total runs batted in. Fellow freshman
Breanna Klaiber added two hits and two RBIs, while sophomores
Abbey Fortin and
Megan Sneeden and junior
Julia Seader all recorded two hits on the day.
Sophomore
Katie Humhej threw a four-hit shutout in the backend of the doubleheader, striking out seven batters.
Game One – Bridgeport 9, LIU Post 7
The Purple Knights captured momentum early in the opener, plating six runs in the top of the third inning to put the Pioneers on their heels. The Pioneers showed no quit, however, as the Green and Gold scored two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings and added three runs in the sixth to make things interesting.
Junior
Leah Mele scored the first Pioneer run on a wild pitch and Seader added an RBI-single in the frame to make it 9-2 in the fourth inning. The Pioneers added another run on a wild pitch and RBI-single in the fifth before Dun ripped a double and Klaiber blasted a two-run home run in the sixth to make it 9-7.
The home run was the last gasp effort, however, as LIU Post went down in order in its final at bat, dropping game one by the 9-7 final.
Game Two – LIU Post 1, Bridgeport 0
The offense disappeared in game two, as the two squads combined for just one run on seven hits in the backend of the two-game set. Humhej stranded four Purple Knight runners on base through the first three innings and Dun provided all the offense that was needed in the fourth with her first career round-tripper, lifting one over the left-center field fence to put LIU Post on top 1-0.
Humhej retired the side in order during the fifth and sixth inning and Bridgeport recorded a hit in the top of the seventh but Humhej did not falter, earning her ninth win of the season.
The Pioneers will return to action on Tuesday, April 17 when they travel to Queens College after the team's non-conference matchup with Southern New Hampshire University was cancelled due to rain forecasted in Brookville tomorrow.
