SPARKILL, N.Y. – The LIU Post softball team suffered its first East Coast Conference loss of the season as part of a doubleheader split with St. Thomas Aquinas College April 12.
Junior
Julia Seader finished the day 4-for-8 from the plate with two runs scored, while junior
Leah Mele added three hits and two runs batted in. Freshman
Breanna Klaiber drove in two runs as well to help lead the offensive efforts.
In the circle, sophomore
Katie Humhej earned the win in game two with a four-hit complete game, striking out three batters.
The Pioneers took advantage of a fielding error in the third inning of game one to jump ahead 2-0, but the Spartans tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and added three runs in the fifth to hang on for the win in the opener of the two-game set.
Klaiber and Mele drove in three runs in the top of the first in game two, however, as the Pioneers rattled off 12 hits to take down the Spartans in game two. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, the Spartans scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings before Humhej shut the door the rest of the way.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, April 14 when they host the University of Bridgeport in ECC action beginning at 12:00 p.m.
