NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 2, 2016) - Powered by a trio of players scoring their first collegiate goals, the LIU Post women's soccer beat Southern New Hampshire University, 3-0, in its 2016 season opener at the SCSU Women's Soccer Classic, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University on Friday at Jess Dow Field.
The Pioneers (1-0) got on the board quickly, as sophomore midfielder
Alice Schonfeldt (Burtrask, Sweden) bent in a 30-yard shot from the far side of the field in the sixth minute. From there, it was all green and gold.
In the 23rd minute, sophomore forward
Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) sent a cross into the middle of the box that found the foot of fellow sophomore
Isabella Fuduli (East Meadow, N.Y.), who fired a low shot in for the marker.
Sophomore keeper
Hillevi Eklow (Väröbacka, Sweden) had one save in the first 45 minutes for LIU Post, which took a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Eklow saw 11 shots and made eight stops, while freshman midfielder
Veronica Saager (East Islip, N.Y.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 81st minute. Again, Huntzinger sent a cross into the box and Saager finished.
The Pioneers were outshot (16-14) by the Penmen, but LIU Post registered 10 shots on goal to SNHU's eight. The green and gold also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
