VALHALLA, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2016) - The LIU Post women's basketball team opened up the road portion of its 2016-17 schedule Wednesday with a 78-64 victory over Mercy College in an East Coast Conference tilt at Westchester Community College.

Freshman forward Mikaiya Moore (Amityville, N.Y.) had a game-high 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting in the win. It was the third time this season that she reached the 20-point plateau.

Up 23-21 nearly two minutes into the second quarter, the green and gold went on a quick 6-0 run in a two-minute stint to expand their lead to 29-21 at the 6:05 mark. Sophomore forward Sasha Patterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) capped off the spurt with a three-point play.

The Pioneers (5-5, 3-1 ECC), who outscored the Mavericks (1-8, 0-4 ECC) in the paint by a 22-8 count in the opening 20 minutes, eventually took a 33-29 advantage into halftime.

Late in the third quarter, LIU Post held a one-possession lead (45-42), until a 9-0 streak by the visitors in a span of 1:11 widened the gap to 54-42 with 47 seconds remaining. Senior guard Kylie Garrett (Mount Orab, Ohio) buried a three-pointer and a jumper in the run.

Then, in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers shot a sizzling 60.0 percent (8-of-15) from the field to pull away from the Mavericks. Moore contributed a team-high eight points in the period, as part of her 23-point effort.

Senior guard Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 15 points, four assists and two steals in the contest. Patterson totaled nine points and nine rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
