WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 1, 2016) - On Saturday, the LIU Post football team won its fifth-straight game, topping No. 15 Assumption College, 19-18, in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt at Multi-Sport Stadium.
Trailing 10-6 in the second quarter, the Pioneers (5-0, 4-0 NE-10) scored on their final drive of the half to take a 12-10 lead into the break. Senior quarterback
Jeff Kidd (Salem, Ore.) connected with red-shirt sophomore running back
Malik Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.) for a go-ahead one-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 left.
That play was set up by a 28-yard hookup between Kidd and Pierre, which put the visitors inside the five-yard line. Pierre, who rushed for a game-high-tying 64 yards in the win, also made five receptions for 67 yards.
Earlier in the period, Kidd fired a 17-yard strike to red-shirt senior wideout
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.). That reception made Hubbard the program's all-time leader in receiving yards with 2,439. He surpasses former standout Jeremiah Pope, who had 2,435 yards from 2000-03.
The Greyhounds (4-1, 3-1 NE-10) rallied though in the fourth quarter, and went in front 18-12 on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Marc Monks (Annandale, N.J.) to Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass.).
However, LIU Post found the end zone on its next series to re-claim the lead. The Pioneers utilized their ground game, rushing for 55 yards, including a two-yard touchdown run by Pierre to give the visitors a 19-18 advantage at the 5:14 mark.
That turned out to be the difference, as sophomore kicker/punter
Joey Tolgyesi (Miami, Fla.) downed Assumption at its own one-yard line for the final possession of the game.
Despite allowing two first downs, the Pioneers forced a turnover on downs at the Greyhounds' 43-yard line to secure the victory.
For the contest, LIU Post forced nine Assumption punts and four turnovers. Red-shirt junior defensive back
Jared Chester (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) made a team-high 11 tackles (seven solo, four assist) and recorded an interception. Red-shirt junior defensive lineman
Anthony DeNunzio (Seaford, N.Y.) had eight tackles (three solo, five assist). Fellow red-shirt junior defensive lineman
Jess Agbotse (Hackensack, N.J.) collected seven tackles (two solo, five assist) and broke up two passes.
Meanwhile, Tolgyesi punted nine times for 351 yards, averaging 39.0 yards per boot. He also pinned the ball inside the 20-yard line five times and drilled a pair of field goals from 40 and 45 yards away.
Head Coach
Bryan Collins and the Pioneers return to the gridiron next Saturday (Oct. 8), when they host NE-10 opponent Saint Anselm College on Homecoming at 1 p.m.
