BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2015) - A lay-up by Molloy's Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) with two-tenths of a second left in regulation sent the LIU Post men's basketball team to a 61-59 loss in East Coast Conference action Wednesday at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers (6-8, 1-5 ECC), who led by two possessions (34-30) at halftime, and Lions (9-5, 4-2 ECC) traded baskets to start the second half. Shortly thereafter, LIU Post held a 46-38 cushion, until Molloy rallied with an 11-0 spurt to go ahead 49-46 at the midway point of the period.
From there, the two squads traded five tied scores and two lead changes over the last nine-plus minutes. In the final seconds of the contest, the green and gold trailed by a basket (59-57). Despite Morris's game-winning lay-up, senior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper from inside the paint to force the opposition's hand.
In the opening stanza, the Pioneers battled back from an early 16-9 deficit, using a 16-5 run in a six-minute stretch to grab a 25-18 lead at the 6:56 mark. LIU Post made six of its seven charity shots in the burst. It was 10-of-15 from the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes. McCann capped the spurt off with back-to-back lay-ups.
The Lions answered though, using a 10-3 response to even the score at 28-all, but the Pioneers got another strong effort at the stripe, along with a McCann jay, in the last 3:29 to carry a 34-30 edge into the break. At the intermission, sophomore forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.) had a game-high 11 points, seven of which came off free throws.
McCann finished with nine points and seven rebounds on the night. Senior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) recorded his third double-double in as many games, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard
Dillon Burns (Flushing, N.Y.) scored 10 points and grabbed three boards. Fellow junior guard
Chris Orozco (Tenafly, N.J.) collected nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Senior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) pulled down eight boards in the defeat.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and the Pioneers return to the hardwood on Saturday (Jan. 17), when they head to Flushing for a 1:30 p.m. matinee at ECC rival Queens.
