FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2015) - Three days after losing at the buzzer, senior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) nailed a jumper as time expired to send the LIU Post men's basketball team to a 70-69 win over Queens in East Coast Conference action Saturday at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Notwithstanding Williams' game-winning basket, the Pioneers (7-8, 2-5 ECC) rallied from a 17-point first-half hole. Down 27-10 with eight-and-a-half minutes left, the green and gold closed out the stanza on an impressive 23-5 run to take a 33-32 lead into the locker room.
Senior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) buried back-to-back threes in the stretch, as part of a 10-point effort. He scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting in 32 minutes off the bench. Junior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) added seven of his 14 points on the afternoon. Williams, who picked up his third-straight double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds), capped the burst with lay-ups in succession.
The second half featured a see-saw affair between the two squads. LIU Post and Queens (2-11, 2-4 ECC) exchanged eight lead changes and three tied scores in the period alone, while neither team had an advantage larger than six points.
In the game's final minute, the Knights' Paul Little (Englewood, N.J.) netted a lay-up at the 15-second mark to give the hosts a 69-68 edge. That forced the Pioneers to call timeout at half court to set up one final play.
Just as the buzzer sounded, Williams knocked down the game-winning jumper to send LIU Post to the victory.
Overall, the Pioneers shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the field, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from deep and 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the foul line. Torres' impressive performance off the bench was accompanied by sophomore forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.). Dotson collected 14 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and his LIU Post squad return to the hardwood Tuesday (Jan. 20), when they host next-door neighbor NYIT in an ECC tilt at the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
