FLUSHING, N.Y. – By earning a doubleheader sweep of Queens College Saturday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium, the LIU Post baseball team recorded its 33rd win of the season and broke its previous season wins record of 32 with one regular season game and postseason play still to come. The Pioneers prevailed 6-2 in game one and 2-0 in game two.
The Pioneers' previous season wins record of 32 was achieved on two different occasions, the 2017 season and the 2010 season.
LIU Post was sensational on the mound as junior
Noah Lorenzo earned his eighth win of the season for LIU Post in game one, striking out three and only allowing two runs in 7.2 innings.
Freshman
Joshua Loeschorn continued his dominant freshman campaign in game two, improving his record to a perfect 9-0 on the season. He threw a complete game and shutout the Mavericks, only allowing two and no walks.
At the plate, sophomore
Christopher Wasson tallied three hits and two RBI. Senior duo
Dave Brehm and
Jimmy Mendyk both also had multi-hit games as each finished with two. Senior
Anthony Vaglica had two RBI, bringing his career tally to 101, while freshman
Giovanni Ciaccio along with seniors
Michael Manzione and
Michael Greene both had one.
Game One – LIU Post 6, Queens 2
While it was Queens who scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, the Pioneers would take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. After Wasson bunted and reached on a fielder's choice, Mendyk scored after throwing error by the Knights' third basemen. Vaglica would then knock an RBI double to left center.
Ciaccio would triple down the right field line then score after Mednyk flew out to third base to make it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the sixth. Manzione blasted his seventh homer of the season over the center field fence to give the Pioneers a 6-1 lead in the top of the seventh.
The Knights were able to add another run, but the Pioneers held on for the 6-2 triumph.
Game Two – LIU Post 2, Queens 0
While Brehm looked ominous in the top of the first by singling to shortstop then stealing second, neither side could was able to put a run on the scoreboard until the top of the fourth.
Manizone led off the inning by drawing a walk then he advanced to second after redshirt junior
Andy Camilo was hit by a pitch. Sophomore
Jahsiah Greene then walked and
Michael Greene would line to right field with Manzione scoring.
The Pioneers made it a 2-0 contest in the top of the seventh after Wasson ripped and RBI single to left field. With Loeshcorn only allowing two hits and no walks, the Pioneers were able to prevail with a 2-0 final score.
