WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – The East Coast Conference recognized three LIU Post student-athletes as conference players of the week following impressive performances.

Baseball's James Varela and softball's Katie Humhej garnered Pitcher of the Week accolades, and men's lacrosse's Jake Gillis earned Rookie of the Week honors.

During LIU Post's 2-1 victory against the University of Bridgeport, Varela struck out 12 Purple Knight batters and allowed just one run on six hits, while surrendering just one walk to earn his fourth Pitcher of the Week. The 12 strikeouts marked the third time Varela fanned 12 or more batters this season, accomplishing the feat against Lincoln University and Assumption College. Varela currently ranks eighth in Division II with 89 strikeouts and 24th with a 1.86 earned run average.

It was a perfect week inside the circle for Humhej earned her second Pitcher of the Week honor this season. Humhej went a perfect 4-0 with a 0.83 ERA. The junior struck out 17 batters over 26 innings and allowed just four total runs. Humhej earned a shutout victory against Mercy College and also defeated No. 13 Southern New Hampshire University where she allowed just two runs during a complete-game.

Gillis earns his sixth Player of the Week accolade of the season, including his fourth Rookie of the Week award. The freshman helped lead the Pioneers to a victory in a Battle of the Boulevard matchup with rival New York Institute of Technology, scoring two goals and adding one assist and three ground balls. This season Gillis ranks ninth in Division II with 3.42 goals per game, and fifth in shooting percentage at 55.4-percent.
