WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – The East Coast Conference honored a spring-best seven LIU Post student-athletes on Monday, April 1 when it named them as Players of the Week after another outstanding week of competition for the Green and Gold.
Baseball, men's lacrosse, and women's lacrosse each had two honorees, while women's track & field boasted one performer of the week. Junior
Zach Fritz earned baseball's Player of the Week and freshman
Giovanni Ciaccio was tabbed as the league's Rookie of the Week. Freshman
Jake Gillis repeated as the ECC's men's lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while senior
Bryan Ochs earns his second Defensive Player of the Week honor. Junior
Alyssa Mallery was also tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week on the women's side and freshman
Hailey Duchnowski earned her third Defensive Player of the Week recognition. Rounding out LIU Post's weekly accolades is sophomore
Alyssa Farrell who was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
With two home runs and two doubles on the week, Fritz slugged 1.200 and finished with nine RBI as he helped the Pioneers to a perfect 3-0 record against Saint Thomas Aquinas. On Saturday, Fritz launched a grand slam to left field and drew four walks during the three victories. Also helping the Pioneers open a perfect 7-0 in ECC play was Ciaccio who collects his second Rookie of the Week honor after hitting .500 (6-for-12) with four RBI and six runs scored. He also drew six walks and had an on-base percentage of .611. Four of his six hits went for extra bases, as Ciaccio recorded two doubles and two triples. On Friday, he went 4-for-5 with three RBI, three runs, two doubles, one triple and two walks in LIU Post's 25-15 win.
Men's lacrosse finished 2-0 last week with victories against Georgian Court University and Molloy College. Gillis continued his torrid start to his rookie campaign by scoring 11 goals and adding five assists to earn his fifth weekly award through seven weeks of competition. Gillis scored six goals in non-conference action against Georgian Court to begin the week before adding five more against Molloy in ECC play on Saturday. On the defensive end, Ochs was terrific between the pipes, making 18 saves while playing less than the full 60 minutes in both contests to earn his second conference award of the year.
Mallery helped women's lacrosse to a 2-0 record as well, accumulating 11 goals, eight draw controls and six ground balls. During the Pioneers' victory against second-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday, Mallery led all players with five goals. Duchnowski was stellar in goal, earning two wins after tallying 28 saves. On Saturday, against Duchnowski finished with 14 saves to help LIU Post earn the upset victory.
Farrell earned ECC Field Athlete of the Week honors after finishing fifth out of 24 competitors in the javelin throw with a toss of 38.06 meters at the Monmouth Season Opener on Friday. Farrell improved by 0.3 meters on her final throw of the day to place fifth behind three Division I opponents.
