BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Two seven-run outputs helped the LIU Post softball team sweep Dominican College in non-conference play on Thursday, March 28 at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
Junior
Abbey Fortin and sophomore
Breanna Klaiber led the Pioneers with four hits apiece, while senior
Leah Mele drove home five runs on the day behind a grand slam, and junior
Allie Laird hit a home run and scored two runs.
In the circle, senior
Hannah Olshevski turned in another impressive outing, allowing just one run while junior
Katie Humhej surrendered just two earned runs during a complete game win.
Game One: LIU Post 7, Dominican 4
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead during the top of the first after three consecutive singles to start the game. A sacrifice fly gave Dominican a 2-0 advantage early, but Humhej stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage.
The Pioneers cut into the deficit during the second inning when sophomore
Patricia Dun drove home one run with a single down the right-field line. LIU Post took full control during the third inning as senior
Julia Seader led off the frame with a single to left-center field. Mele tied the game later in the inning with an RBI-double and senior
Ashley Melendez broke the game open with a two-run single to left center to give LIU Post a 5-2 lead.
LIU Post tacked on two more runs during the fifth on a two-run triple by Dun, giving LIU Post a large enough cushion to hold off a two-run seventh inning by the Chargers.
Game Two: LIU Post 7, Dominican 1
Dominican got out to a hot start when the Chargers rallied with two outs to score the first run of the game on an RBI-single. The lead vanished instantly, however, when Laird led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to left field, tying the score at 1-1. Back-to-back doubles by Fortin and Klaiber gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead after the opening frame and Olshevski limited the Dominican bats from there.
An RBI-double by Laird during the second inning gave the Pioneers a two-run cushion and Olshevski stranded two runners on base during the fourth and fifth innings. After the Pioneers loaded the bases with one out during the fifth, Mele launched a home run to left field, clearing the bases and giving the Pioneers all of the run support they would need the rest of the way.
LIU Post returns to action on Saturday, March 30 when the Pioneers return to East Coast Conference action against Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 12:00 p.m.
