WASHINGTON – The No. 6/8 LIU Post women's lacrosse team opened East Coast Conference (ECC) play with a 20-1 triumph over the University of the District of Columbia Saturday afternoon at UDC Field.
 
The Pioneers' 20 goals was a season-high and their nine assists tied their season-best. LIU Post out-shot the Firebirds 37-3 and led in ground balls 19-5 and draw controls 17-6. The Pioneers were also a perfect 5-of-5 on clear attempts.
 
Offensively, LIU Post was led by juniors Paige Sherlock and Alyssa Mallery who both had a game-high four goals. Junior Jenna Doherty added three while junior Sara Stephens, sophomore Jamie Alvino and freshman Emma Cantwell added two each. Senior Trish Brisotti, junior Hannah von Hollen and freshman Whitney Moran also scored for LIU Post. Junior Angela Deren led the game in assists with three while freshman Madeline Schaefer had a game and career-high five ground balls. Moran, von Hollen and Sherlock each had three draw controls while von Hollen's two caused turnovers were a game-high.

LIU Post raced out to a three-goal lead within the first two minutes of the game thanks to goals by Mallery, Sherlock and Brisotti. Sherlock and Mallery would score again at 25:09 and 22:53 to give the Pioneers a 5-0 advantage then UDC would score it's only goal of the game with 22:17 left in the half.
 
The Pioneers responded to the Firebirds goal with a goal by Mallery with 20:35 on the clock and goals by Deren, Alvino, another by Mallery, back-to-back goals by Doherty, Cantwell and Deren to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. Cantwell's goal was the first of her college career.
 
It didn't take long for LIU Post to get rolling in the second half as Stephens scored with 28:15 left to play and Doherty followed with her third goal of the game with 25:53 remaining to give the Pioneers a 16-1 lead. Freshman Caitlin Gallagher found Cantwell for her second goal of the game with 16:42 remaining, von Hollen scored on a free position shot and Moran scored the first goal of her career with 4:59 on the clock as the Pioneers held on for the 20-1 victory.
