Shannon Doyle matched her career high with 20 points as the LIU Post women's basketball team raced past Mercy College in East Coast Conference action, 69-58 inside Victory Hall on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Doyle knocked down three three-pointers in 32 minutes off the bench, adding eight rebounds and four assists. Graduate student
Sasha Patterson grabbed her 1,000th collegiate rebound during the win, combining 301 boards at Mohawk Valley Community College with over 700 at LIU Post. In total, Patterson hauled in 14 rebounds and chipped in 15 points for a double-double. Junior
Dominique Williams chipped in 12 points for the final Pioneer in double figures.
With LIU Post leading by one point (19-18) with 8:32 remaining in the second quarter, the Pioneers rattled off 10 unanswered tallies to take a 27-18 lead midway through the period. The Mavericks battled back to close out the half, however, tying the game at 28-28 before the Pioneers scored the final four points of the half to lead 32-28 at the intermission.
Despite taking another double-digit lead (44-34) during the third quarter, the Pioneers took just a four-point advantage (46-42) into the final stanza. Williams and Doyle combined for 11 points during the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter to help the Pioneers cling to a seven-point lead (61-54) with one minute remaining. Taylah Hudson and
Robyn Francis went a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line to help the Green and Gold put the game out of reach for good.
LIU Post is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 when it travels to Molloy College for a 5:00 p.m. tip with the Lions in ECC play.
