BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Five players finished in double figures to lead the LIU Post women's basketball team back into the win column with an 80-74 triumph against the University of Bridgeport inside the Pratt Recreation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
Graduate student
Sasha Patterson netted a game-high 19 points while pulling down 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Junior
Mikaiya Moore posted a season-best 15 points, knocking down a career-high three three-point baskets in the process. Redshirt-juniors
Taylah Hudson and
Robyn Francis chipped in 14 points apiece, and senior
Shannon Doyle added 13 points off the bench with three triples.
LIU Post made 10 three-pointers on the evening, shooting 41-percent overall from the field. Despite a 40-30 disadvantage on the glass, the Green and Gold committed just 11 turnovers and held a 27-5 edge in bench points. The Pioneers also held a 7-1 advantage in blocked shots, including a game-high three rejections from Moore.
Bridgeport jumped out to an early 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter, holding LIU Post to a 0-for-9 effort from the field. The Purple Knights stretched the lead to as many as 14 points (27-13) with 5:36 remaining in the second stanza, but the tides were about to shift in the Pioneers' favor.
The Green and Gold caught fired on both ends of the floor, going on a 20-4 run and forcing five Bridgeport turnovers over a four-minute span to take its first lead of the evening (33-31). Doyle knocked down a corner three-pointer as time expired on the first half to take a 36-34.
After a close battle during the third period, the Pioneers netted seven unanswered points late in the frame to take a 58-47 advantage. Two three-pointers to open the fourth quarter helped spark another burst that gave LIU Post a 14-point (67-53) lead with just over seven minutes remaining. The Purple Knights did not back down, however, cutting the deficit in half (69-62) with 3:45 remaining. A three-point basket by Bridgeport's Nicole Johnson with 1:52 to play made it a two-possession game, but it was as close as the Purple Knights could get the rest of the way as the Pioneers snapped a five-game skid to improve to 5-3 in East Coast Conference competition.
LIU Post will look for its 21st-consecutive victory against Mercy College on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry for a 12:00 p.m. tip-off with the Mavericks.
