BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Following its first conference loss of the season, the LIU Post women's volleyball team swept Mercy College, 3-0 inside the Pratt Recreation Center on Friday, Sept. 28.

The Pioneers overcame a poor offensive performance to come from behind and take the opening set by a 28-26 final. The Pioneers hit just .160 as a team but used kills by junior Kassie Akouri-Tejador and junior Lea Brady to close out the frame. The momentum carried into set two when the Pioneers opened with a 5-1 run to begin the game stanza and eventually stretched the lead to 13-6 after a kill by freshman Kiora Ridgeway. The Mavericks were never able to recover, and senior Rachel Londot eventually put the finishing touches on the set victory with her 10th kill of the evening.

After the score remained deadlocked at 14-14 midway through the third set, senior Giulia Genna found the floor with a quick attack from the front row to give the Pioneers a 15-14 lead. LIU Post never looked back from there, closing the match with an 11-4 run for the sweep of the Mavericks.

With the win, LIU Post improves to 11-6 on the year and 3-1 in East Coast Conference play. The Mavericks dip to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in league play/

TOP PERFORMERS:

  • Sophomore Lauren Kloos and Londot put down 15 kills each to lead the Pioneer offensive attack. Londot added 13 digs for a double-double.
  • Akouri-Tejador captained the offense with a season-high 31 assists.
  • On the defensive end, junior Samantha Colombo tallied 15 digs and classmate Lea Brady and Ridgeway added two block assists.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow when they travel to the University of Bridgeport for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Purple Knights.
