GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Despite a career night by sophomore
Lauren Kloos where she finished with a match and career-high 20 kills along with a .425 attacking percentage the LIU Post women's volleyball team fell to Adelphi University 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-10) Thursday night inside the Adelphi Center for Recreation and Sport.
Along with Kloos' 20 kills being a career high it was also the most kills in a match by a Pioneer in 2018 as it topped the previous total of 19 set by
Rachel Londot against Flagler College on Sept. 7.
LIU Post now moves to 8-5 (1-0) on the season while Adelphi is 8-3.
Match Rewind
While Adelphi jumped out to an 0-2 lead in the opening set LIU Post countered with kills from sophomore
Lauren Kloos and senior
Rachel Londot. Keyed by a pair of Panther errors, the Pioneers then went on a 4-0 run that also featured back-to-back service aces by junior
Abby Eckhardt and gave the Pioneers a 7-3 advantage. With LIU Post ahead 9-4 Adelphi used a 6-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. The Pioneers and Panthers continued trading points and with LIU Post up 14-13 a 4-0 run by the Panthers gave them a lead they would not surrender for the remainder of the set as they went on to win 25-20.
The Panthers opened the second set with a 4-0 lead; it ended with a service error and a kill by Kloos from an assist by junior
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor. Down 12-10, kills by junior
Lea Brady and Kloos tied the score for the first time in the set. With the score then tied 13-13, an Adelphi service error led the Pioneers on a 4-0 run that also featured kills by Londot, Kloos and senior
Elise Strange. The set continued to be a back-and-forth battle; tied 19-19 kills by Brady and Kloos gave the Pioneers a 21-19 advantage. The Panthers then took the lead 22-21 but the Pioneers answered with another pair of kills by Brady and Kloos to lead 23-23. Back-to-back kills by Kloos closed the set out with LIU Post winning 25-23.
A 4-0 run featuring a kill by Kloos, a service ace by
Allie Lackner along with a ball handling and an attacking error by the Panthers saw the Pioneers earn an early advantage in the third set. While Adelphi halted the Pioneers run, a Panther service error led into a 3-0 LIU Post run that also featured a pair of Pioneer kills by Londot and Kloos that saw them lead 7-1. From there, Adelphi was able to battle back and gradually chip away at the Pioneers' lead; the Pioneers eventually led 16-14. With the Pioneers up 19-17 Brady propelled LIU Post on a 5-0 run also featuring kills by Kloos, junior
Shannon Sahli and a pair of Panther attacking errors that saw them up 24-20; it was Kloos who again closed the set out with a kill as the Pioneers prevailed 25-20.
Adelphi opened the fourth set with a 3-0 run that was stopped by a Brady kill and a Strange solo block. Shortly after the Panthers would go on a 4-0 run and hold an 8-4 lead from which they never looked back as they ended up taking the set 25-12.
After the Panthers took a 10-5 lead to open the fifth set the Pioneers narrowed the margin thanks to a kill by junior
Samantha Colombo keyed that keyed a 3-0 Pioneer run also featuring kills by Londot and Kloos. LIU Post chipped away at the Panthers lead to the Point they only trailed 12-10 however a 3-0 Panther run set up match point for Adelphi as they went on to win 15-11.
