THE FIRST LOOK
Just 10 miles separate LIU Post and Adelphi University, but the two squads will make the nearly 300-mile trip to Syracuse for the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament this week. The Pioneers captured the No. 3 and final seed in the East Region after taking down Mercy College in the East Coast Conference Championship May 5. Adelphi fell to the host Dolphins on May 6, falling to the No. 2 seed and missing out on home field advantage and a first-round bye in the regional bracket.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Adelphi has had the edge in the all-time series with the Panthers winning 11 of the 20 matchups between the two squads, including the last four meetings dating back to May 17, 2014. LIU Post is 2-4 against Adelphi at neutral sites.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Pioneers and Panthers last met on April 7 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. Adelphi, then ranked No. 2/3 in the national polls, held off the LIU Post upset bid with a 7-5 victory. The back-and-forth matchup featured five lead changes and four ties before the Panthers held LIU Post scoreless for the first 28 minutes of the second half. Adelphi held the Pioneers to just two second-half shot attempts to stifle the offensive flow. Senior
Olivia Kirk was outstanding between the pipes, making 17 saves on 24 shots on goal.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
The Pioneer offense is peaking at the right time, as the Green and Gold scored 37 goals over two contests in the ECC Tournament after suffering consecutive losses to close out the regular season. Much of the offensive flow can be accredited to the recent explosion of ECC Tournament Most Outstanding Player
Brianna Feldman. The sophomore scored 12 goals during the tournament, including a career-high seven-goal effort against Mercy in the finals. Feldman is not the only player to step up as of late, however, as classmate
Sara Stephens has netted seven of her 21 goals this season during the team's last four contests, including three-goal efforts against Lindenwood and Molloy.
LIU Post is looking to build on its rich NCAA Tournament history this week as head coach McNamara makes her ninth appearance in the national championship, composing a record of 11-6 all-time during the nine appearances and has lost the opening matchup just one time (Adelphi 2010, 14-9).
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Adelphi fell to Le Moyne in the Northeast-10 Championship by a 14-10 final. The loss marked just the second loss of the season for the Panthers and the first since they came up short against Florida Southern in the season-opener February 17. Just three of the Panthers' 18 victories this season came by less than three goals, with the two-goal victory against LIU Post the closest-contested game. The seven goals scored by Adelphi against the Pioneers was the only contest that the Panthers scored less than 10 goals.
The offense is extremely high-powered, ranking 10th in the nation with 17.25 goals per game.
Alison Johnson has been the catalyst on the offensive end, tallying 92 assists on the year to lead the country in total assists. On the receiving end of many of Johnson's assists is
Kole Pollock whose 78 goals rank fifth in the country.
On the defensive end,
Emma Lemanski has been outstanding in the crease, allowing just 6.81 goals per game. The Panthers have allowed fewer than 10 goals in 13 games, smothering opposing offenses and forcing over 20 turnovers per game.
