BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman
Ja'Lyn Armstrong dropped an early career-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead the LIU Post women's basketball team to an 83-66 victory against Georgian Court University inside the Pratt Recreation Center on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Armstrong finished with a team-high 20 points, while also collecting six rebounds and tallying four steals and two blocks. Another outstanding performance was had by senior
Shannon Doyle who came within striking distance of a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Graduate student
Sasha Patterson chipped in 14 points in just 18 minutes and senior
Asia Turner added 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers for LIU Post.
The Pioneers shot nearly 41-percent from the floor despite struggling to a 24-percent effort from beyond the arc. LIU Post collected 50 points inside the paint and added 30 fast break points, recording just eight turnovers on the day.
It was a one-point game (21-20) at the end of the first quarter and the narrow score line continued late in the half before the Pioneers closed out the second frame on a 5-0 run to take a seven-point lead into the half (42-35).
The lead ballooned to 17 points with just under three minutes remaining during the third quarter as the Pioneers used a 10-1 burst over a seven-minute span to take control of the contest. The spark was all that LIU Post needed to hold off the Lions the rest of the way, as Georgian Court never got within single digits again.
The Pioneers will face another strong Central Atlantic Athletic Conference squad on Tuesday, Nov. 20 in a make-up of Thursday's postponed contest when it hosts Caldwell University at 5:00 p.m.
