BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Led by a two-goal effort by graduate student
Lukas Ostermann, the LIU Post men's soccer team outlasted the University of the District of Columbia, 2-1 at Pioneer Soccer Park on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Ostermann's two goals helped the Pioneers overcome an early deficit in a rematch of the 2017 East Coast Conference championship match. With the win, LIU Post improves to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in ECC play, while UDC falls to 4-6-1 on the year and 2-3 in league play.
The Firebirds struck first during the 21st minute when Raphael Pacano headed home a cross by Malik Thom off the right post for the game's opening tally. The lead last only momentarily, however, as Ostermann responded with a header of his own on a corner kick by freshman
Javier Rehberger Martin during the 31st minute. The 1-1 score line remained for the remaining 15 minutes of the opening half, as both sides entered halftime deadlocked.
Despite having been outshot 7-5 during the second half, the Green and Gold knocked on the door several times but could not break through until the midway point as Ostermann this time chested down a ball from freshman
Luke Kasulke and fired a rocket to the left side of the goal for his league-leading 13th goal of the season in what proved to be the game-winner for the Pioneers.
Senior
Oliver Hessner Hansen made two saves on the day for LIU Post, improving to 7-2 on the season.
The Pioneers return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Wilmington University for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference battle with the Wildcats.
