EASTON, Mass. – The No. 9 LIU Post field hockey team earned an impressive 4-1 victory over No. 6 Stonehill College Sunday at W.B. Mason Stadium in a game that saw senior
Emily Miller set a new program record for career points.
"So unbelievably proud of the way we came out to play today," said head coach Raenee Savin. The coaches up with a game plan and the players stuck to it. Rachel was rock solid in goal for us and had excellent defense in front of her. Our offense came out on fire! With Miller's five-point game she broke the school's all-time career point record of 195 set by Carlee Dragon in 2013."
The win moved the Pioneers to 10-4 overall and 9-3 in the Northeast-10.
Miller, now the LIU Post field hockey record holder in both career points and goals, led the Pioneers with two goals in what was the fifth game this season she has scored more than once. Sophomore
Sammy Bell and freshman
Maddie Leitner also scored for the Pioneers with Bell's goal making today's game the fifth-consecutive contest she has scored in. Miller and junior
Taylor Brodsky each added an assist while sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Vellis finished with a career-high with 11 saves.
Vellis' career-high beats her previous total of 10 that she recorded on two occasions; against Merrimack College on Oct. 13, 2018 and on Oct. 5, 2017 against West Chester University.
Miller gave the Pioneers an early lead at 1:26 after collecting a loose ball and charging from the top of the circle. She scored her second goal of the game at 10:26 after tipping the ball in off a crossing pass from Brodsky.
Stonehill bounced back with a goal of their own at 15:30 but LIU Post managed to add more goal prior to halftime and head into the break with a 3-1 lead. At 34:06 Leitner drove past the goalkeeper on a counter after the Pioneers received the ball from their defensive zone.
It didn't take long for the Pioneers to build their lead in the second half as Bell scored her ninth goal of the season at 39:50 after she turned and drove from the center circle after receiving a Miller pass from the right side to give the Pioneer a 4-1 lead from which the Skyhawks would recover.
