EASTON, Mass. – A late goal during the second half helped the LIU Post women's soccer team close out the 2018 regular season with a 1-0 victory against regionally-ranked Stonehill College at W.B. Mason Stadium on Friday, Oct. 26.
The Pioneers improve to 12-2-3 on the season with the victory in the contest that was moved up due to the forecasted Nor'easter scheduled to impact the northeast on Saturday. The Skyhawks dip to 13-5 on the season with the setback.
Sophomore
Samantha Gordon broke a scoreless tie during the 76th minute with her sixth goal of the season when senior
Alice Schonfeldt found her on the back post on the Pioneers' sixth corner kick of the evening. The LIU Post offense had pressured the Skyhawk backline for much of the second half before the attack finally broke through for the game's only score.
Senior goalkeeper
Hillevi Eklow put forth another impressive performance in goal, making two saves for her ninth shutout of the season. Eklow's scoreless streak approaches 500 minutes with the blanking of Stonehill, having last surrendered a goal late against the New York Institute of Technology five games ago.
The Green and Gold held a significant 15-6 advantage in shot attempts and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks on a night that was a defensive stalemate during the first half. LIU Post tallied 10 of its 15 shots during the final 45 minutes and earned seven corner kicks during the second period.
The Pioneers will be doing some scoreboard watching tomorrow as the University of Bridgeport travels to Roberts Wesleyan College for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff in a contest that will determine the final seeding for the East Coast Conference tournament next week. The Purple Knights currently hold the No. 2 seed in the conference standings, however a victory against the Red Hawks would propel them into the No. 1 overall seed. LIU Post has already clinched the No. 3 seed for the postseason and will travel to the No. 2 site for its semifinal matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
