DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – A late goal in regulation coupled with a game-winner in overtime doomed the LIU Post men's soccer team at No. 17 Mercy College as the Pioneers fell 3-2 to the Mavericks in double overtime on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Mercy found the back of the net with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation when Manuel Achondo headed a cross from Jose Izarra inside the right post to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus fired a shot past senior goalkeeper Oliver Hessner Hansen off an assist from Ignacio Mangada to propel the Mavericks to the 3-2 victory.

LIU Post took the lead during the first half on graduate student Lukas Ostermann's 15th goal of the season, taking a cross from sophomore Tom Stenberg and finishing into an empty net for the opening tally of the contest. Achondo answered 15 minutes later to level the score at 1-1 at the end of the first half where Mercy outshot the Pioneers, 9-2.

Midway through the second half, LIU Post took the lead again when Ostermann found the back of the net for the second time, heading in a cross from junior Mike Sutton to put the Green and Gold on top, 2-1.

The Mavericks once again dominated the half, outshooting LIU Post 12-2, but the Pioneer defense held off 11 shot attempts before Achondo headed home the game-tying strike during the 90th minute.

Hessner Hansen matched his season-high with eight saves during the loss. Ostermann continued his torrid streak on the pitch, increasing his league-lead in goals (16) and points (37).

The Pioneers will look to buck their two-game skid when they host Saint Thomas Aquinas College at the Pioneer Soccer Park on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
