BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Led by
Kristen Olsen's 15-points, the LIU Post Pioneers topped Queens College 69-54 Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.
With the win, the Pioneers remain unblemished in ECC play with a 5-0 record and are now 10-4 on the season. The Knights evened to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
In addition to Olsen,
Robyn Francis had 12 points for LIU Post and
Shannon Doyle added 11 points to the victory.
The Pioneers jumped to a 7-0 lead and never relinquished control as they led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. LIU Post increased its lead to 13-points, 28-15, with a layup from Isla Power with 6:01 to play in the second quarter. However, Queens College was about to mount a comeback as free throws by Celeste Moran sparked a Knights 13-1 rally that made it a one-point game, 29-28, with 43 seconds left in the first half. The Pioneers maintain control of the scoreboard with a 32-30 edge heading into the break.
Over the course of the final 20 minutes, the Pioneers climbed to a 25-point advantage, 69-44, on a three-pointer from
Patrice Harding with 2:07 to play. The Knights chipped away at the gap with a series of free throws and ending with a jumper from Ramon Lopez for the 69-54 final.
Beth Bonin led the Knights and the game with 16 points. The Pioneers led from every aspect of the game, except at the charity stripe where the Knights out-shot the Pioneers 78.6% to 57.9% overall.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Jan. 12 on the road against the Wildcats of Daemen College. Tip-off in the East Coast Conference game is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Amherst, N.Y.
