BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Behind a pair of
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) goals and a three-point showing by
freshman Sammy Bell (Milngavie, Glasgow, United Kingdom), the LIU Post field hockey team defeated Southern Conn. State by a score of 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Pioneers (2-0) held just a one-score advantage heading into the intermission as Miller sent home an unassisted marker in the 22
nd minute.
After the break, Bell beat the defense off a feed from freshman midfielder
Kate Melvin (Milford, Del.) to double the LIU Post score at 2-0 at 43:28.
Just 2:20 minutes later, Miller and Bell teamed up for Miller's second tally of the day. Putting the game away in the 63
rd minute was junior forward
Molly Cunha (North Easton, Mass.) who found the back of the net after receiving a pass by senior forward
Kaycee Zelkovsky (Lambertville, N.J.).
The Owls (1-4) managed to get on the board with less than five minutes left in the contest bringing the final score to 4-1.
The green and gold took an overwhelming 44 shots (33 on goal) to SCSU's four (three on goal), while the Owls' goalie Brianna Craft made a game-high 27 saves. On the other side, freshman
Rachel Vellis (Wayne, N.J.) turned aside two shots.
The Pioneers return to action at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 14 for a 4 p.m. tilt against East Stroudsburg.
