BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Apr. 9, 2017) - On Sunday, the LIU Post baseball team won a 3-2 extra-inning decision over East Coast Conference rival University of Bridgeport at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
For much of the contest, senior pitchers
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) and Matt Van Riper (Elmwood Park, N.J.) were locked in a pitcher's duel, trading zeroes over the first six innings.
The Pioneers (14-12, 6-3 ECC) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh, when sophomore first baseman
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore outfielder
Joe Piscitelli (Levittown, N.Y.) for the game's opening run.
The green and gold eventually trailed 2-1 in the ninth though, but fought back to send the contest into extra innings.
Down to their final out with the bases loaded, sophomore third baseman
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) drew a walk to force in junior outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) for the game-tying run.
Then, in extras, Andreoli came home for the eventual game-winning run in the 11th. After a pair of walks and a hit batsman filled the bases with two outs, sophomore second baseman
Sal Geraci (Bayport, N.Y.) was hit with a pitch to put the Pioneers back in front.
DeCarli allowed two earned runs or fewer for the fourth-consecutive start and struck out seven in the no-decision.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. Fellow senior hurler
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up his sixth save, recording a pair of strikeouts in the process.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and his LIU Post squad are back in action on Monday (Apr. 10), when they face ECC rival Bridgeport at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard at 4 p.m.
