FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2017) - On Saturday, the LIU Post softball team split a pair of games with Queens College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader in Flushing.

The Pioneers (23-18, 9-9 ECC) took the opener from the Knights (9-14, 6-13 ECC) by a 2-1 count, before falling in the nightcap, 7-3.

Game #1: LIU Post 2, Queens 1
In the opener, sophomore pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) was immaculate yet again, throwing a complete-game four-hitter with three strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Pioneers took the early lead in the top of the first. Sophomore designated player Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) laced a two-out RBI single to right-center to drive in freshman outfielder Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) for the game's opening run.

Then, in the sixth, the green and gold struck again with two outs to tack on some much-needed insurance. This time, Fortin came home on an RBI single by junior first baseman Gianna Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to increase LIU Post's cushion to 2-0.

Queens cut the deficit in half in its half of the sixth on a Stevianne Ognibene (West Islip, N.Y.) solo homer, but Olshevski kept the Knights off the board for the remainder of the contest to seal the victory.

Game #2: LIU Post 3, Queens 7
Tied 1-1 in the nightcap, the Pioneers went in front in the top of the third, on a two-out RBI single by freshman third baseman Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.).

The green and gold eventually led 3-1 in the contest, after an RBI double off the bat of junior outfielder Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) in the top of the sixth.

However, the Knights rallied with seven runs in the final two innings to steal the win. Senior catcher Kristen Boody (Centereach, N.Y.) hit a walk-off grand slam in the seventh to salvage the split for Queens.

Freshman pitcher Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) threw 6.1 innings of five-hit, seven-run (six earned), four-strikeout ball in the decision.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad are back at it Sunday (Apr. 23), when they host Molloy College in an ECC twinbill at noon at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
