BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2017) - On Sunday, the LIU Post softball team kept rolling with a sweep of East Coast Conference nemesis Queens College at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville.
The Pioneers (11-9, 2-2 ECC) staved off the Knights (4-4, 1-3 ECC) in both contests, winning by 7-3 and 5-2 counts.
Game #1: LIU Post 7, Queens 3
Down 1-0 in the opener, the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to grab a three-run advantage.
Sophomore catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) evened things up with an RBI double and subsequently scored the go-ahead run on an infield error by the Knights.
Later in the inning, freshman third baseman
Megan Sneeden (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) added to the hosts' lead with a two-RBI double up the middle, making it a 4-1 game.
Queens fought back though and closed the gap to a one-run game (4-3), before LIU Post responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to expand its lead to 7-3.
Freshman outfielder
Abbey Fortin (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) had a two-run homer in the frame. Senior pinch-hitter
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) added an RBI double to left.
Yet, the Knights continued to battle, as the visitors brought the potential game-tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh.
However, sophomore pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.), who let up just one walk and struck out two in her start,
induced a groundout to complete the victory.
Game #2: LIU Post 5, Queens 2
Tied 1-1 in the nightcap, the Pioneers capitalized on a throwing error in the fourth to plate Sneeden from second, which put the hosts in front.
Then, in the fifth, sophomore designated player
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) provided some insurance for LIU Post with a one-out solo homer to left.
The green and gold eventually tacked on two more runs in the sixth, on a Seader two-RBI single, to shut the door on the Knights.
Freshman pitcher
Katie Humhej (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) tossed six innings of four-hit, two-run, two-walk, four-strikeout ball in the victory. Olshevski came on in relief and retired the side in order in the seventh for her first collegiate save.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to action Tuesday (Apr. 4), when they host ECC rival University of Bridgeport at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
