MEDFORD, N.Y. (Mar. 20, 2017) - On Sunday, the LIU Post equestrian team won its sixth-consecutive high point ribbon and qualified for the Zone Championships at the Suffolk Community College Show, held at Country Farms in Medford.
The Pioneers, who won Zone 2 Region 4 for the 2016-17 campaign, were led by senior
Alex Rand (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) for the second-straight week. She captured the Cacchione Cup at the competition, which is awarded to the open rider with the most points overall in flat and jumping.
In addition, Rand's efforts catapulted her to a bid to the 2017 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships from May 4-7 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.
Three other riders won their respective classes for the Pioneers. Junior
Mallory Slack (East Islip, N.Y.) came in first in the open fences. Sophomore
Chloe Hoerner (Brightwaters, N.Y.) had a first-place ride in the intermediate flat. Freshman
Cara Sappelsa (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished first in the novice fences.
Sophomore
Vanessa Finazzo (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and freshman
Kate Galvin (Southington, N.Y.) each placed second in the novice flat. Freshmen
Jillian Lento (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and
Nicolette Signorelli (Bellmore, N.Y.) were third in their classes.
Junior
Sara Peterson (Huntington, N.Y.) added a fourth-place ride in the walk-trot-canter, while fellow junior
Alyssa Rehm (Kings Park, N.Y.) took fifth. Junior
Heather Grova (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) earned a fifth-place ribbon in the open flat in her first show back from injury.

Brooke Chasin and the Pioneers return to action next Sunday (Mar. 26), when they ride at the Regional Championships at Good Shepherd Farm in Yaphank.
