Women's Basketball Suffers 81-76 Defeat at Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 22, 2017) - On Wednesday night, the LIU Post women's basketball team rallied from a 16-point hole, but fell 81-76 to University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference showdown at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium in Bridgeport.
Trailing 30-14 early in the second quarter, the Pioneers (11-16, 7-10 ECC) wrapped up the first half on an 18-6 run to trim the deficit to 36-32 at the intermission. The green and gold had six different scorers in the burst, led by
Kylie Garrett's
(Mount Orab, Ohio) five points.
Then, in the third quarter, the visitors came back to tie the score at 40-all, on a free throw by sophomore guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) at the 7:03 mark.
However, the Purple Knights (15-12, 9-8 ECC) answered with a 14-4 run in a stint of 3:48 to re-gain their double-digit lead (54-44) with 1:40 left. Graduate forward Anastasia Williams (Central Islip, N.Y.) paced the hosts with six points in the effort.
In the fourth quarter, Bridgeport led by a comfortable 70-58 margin, until a 12-3 response by LIU Post made it a one-possession game (73-70) with 35 seconds remaining.
Freshman guard
Dominique Williams (Queens Village, N.Y.) netted a pair of lay-ups in the spurt. Doyle and freshman forward
Mikaiya Moore (Amityville, N.Y.) each contributed a lay-up, as well.
Though the Pioneers eventually managed to close the gap to 77-75 in the final seconds, the Purple Knights sank all eight of their free-throw attempts down the stretch to seal the win.
Garrett poured in a team-high 16 points in the loss, to go along with three rebounds and two steals. Moore scored 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting and dished out three assists. Doyle totaled 12 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore forward
