PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 19, 2017)
- On Sunday, the LIU Post women's swimming team placed fourth out of 16 teams at the 2017 Metropolitan Conference Championships at the Rutgers Aquatic Center in Piscataway.

The Pioneers amassed 909 total points at the three-day meet, trailing only University of Bridgeport (1,098 points), Rowan University (1,086 points) and The College of New Jersey (933 points).

Junior Laura Bendfeldt (Grosshansdorf, Germany), who was named the 2017 Met Conference Co-Swimmer of the Meet, won the 100-yard freestyle in a personal-best and NCAA-provisional 50.91.

In the lone long-distance event of the day, sophomore Eline Swensen (Langhus, Norway) came in second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, after posting an NCAA "B" cut and lifetime-best of 17:29.69.

Sophomore Elin Kvarnemar (Varberg, Sweden) finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the pad at 2:10.71. Freshman Cassie St. Angelo (Wakefield, R.I.) won the "B" final and placed ninth overall in the event with a time of 2:08.42.

In the preliminaries of the 200-back, freshman Karis Fuller (London, England) swam past her opposition with a 2:01.18 clocking. That time was also good for an NCAA "B" cut.

Junior Jacqueline Tonn (Edmonton, Alberta) led the green and gold in the 200-yard breaststroke with a sixth-place mark of 2:27.79, while sophomore Caitlin Johnstone (Ashburton, New Zealand) was eighth at 2:29.91. Freshman Elizabeth Law (Chester Springs, Pa.) won the "C" final of the 200-breast in 2:35,53.

Sophomore Brianna LiCausi (Howard Beach, N.Y.) sprinted to a 13th-place time of 54.56 in the 100-free. Freshman Jessica Argelander (La Verne, Calif.) followed in 14th at a personal-record 54.74.

In the competition's final event, the team of Fuller, LiCausi, Argelander and St. Angelo finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, clocking a 3:31.89.

Head Coach Michael Travers and the Pioneers now await word on who will qualify for the 2017 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held Mar. 8-11 in Birmingham, Ala.
