Melvin leads No. 5 Field Hockey Past #6 Stonehill, 2-1, on Senior Day

Brookville, N.Y. - Freshman Kate Melvin scored the game-winner in the 44th minute as the #5 LIU Post field hockey team earned a 2-1victory over NE-10 rival #6 Stonehill College at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 15-3 on the year and are 8-3 in conference play, as the Skyhawks slip to 13-5 (10-2 NE-10) with the loss.
Stonehill opened the scoring in the last 45 seconds of the first half when Kacie Smith capitalized on a breakaway and tallied her 40th goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
LIU Post found an equalizer in the 36th minute when Kaycee Zelkovsky redirected Melvin's set-piece attempt for her 13th goal of the year. Eight minutes later, after a Pioneer penalty corner, Melvin, who was surging into the box, pounced on the loose ball and finished off her third goal of the season to earn LIU Post a crucial 2-1 win.
LIU Post outshot the Skyhawks 14-3 and held the advantage in penalty corners 15-3.
