Brookville, N.Y. - The No. 6 LIU Post men's soccer team clinched a spot in the upcoming East Coast Conference Championship with a 3-0 win over Mercy College at Pioneer Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon. The victory also moved the Pioneers into first place in the ECC standings.
Mercy controlled the early action, compiling a 10-2 advantage in shots in the early going but Harry Pearse (Berkshire, London, England) turned the momentum in the Pioneers' favor by opening the scoring with a goal off a feed from Lukas Ostermann (Saterland, Germany) in the 24th minute.
Martin Lozano (Buenos Aires, Argentina) upped the score to 2-0 in LIU Post's favor by converting on a penalty kick just before halftime. Johann Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) iced the game for the Pioneers with his third goal of the season in the 80th minute.
Oliver Hessner Hansen (Vaerloese, Denmark) made six saves on the day to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
The win moves LIU Post to 11-0-2 (5-0-1 ECC) on the year, while Mercy falls to 10-4 (5-2 ECC) with the defeat. The Pioneers are back on the pitch this Saturday when they hit the road to take on conference foe, St. Thomas Aquinas. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
