BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2016) - Playing on its home field for the first time in 2016, the 21st-ranked LIU Post women's soccer team drew to a 1-1 tie with Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville.
The Pioneers (2-0-1) outshot the Owls (0-2-1), 24-11, and held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal in 110 minutes of action.
Southern Connecticut State got on the board first in the fifth minute. After a free kick that led to a scamble in the box, Caroline Staudle headed one home for the early 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers managed five shots in the first 45 minutes, but just one was on target. Gabrielle Arruda made one save for the Owls to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, LIU Post turned up the offense.
In the 54th minute, sophomore forward
Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) rang one off the post. Freshman midfielder
Medina Mulic (Ridgewood, N.Y.) followed, but sent the rebound shot high.
Media would have another shot blocked a minute later. In the 57th minute, fellow freshman
Veronica Saager (East Islip, N.Y.) sent one wide, before Mulic had another shot blocked in the 58th minute.
The Pioneers took five more shots before finally breaking through in the 75th minute. Junior midfielder
Klara Berggren (Stockholm, Sweden) cleaned up a rebound to tie the game at 1-all.
From there, both defenses kept the game tied. The green and gold took five shots before the final horn of regulation, while the Owls had one shot blocked and another saved, sending the match into overtime.
In the first extra session, the Pioneers took a pair of shots, one that was turned aside by Arruda, while the Owls managed one shot. In the second overtime period, SCSU took a pair of shots to the Pioneers one, none of which were on target.

Mark Dawson and his Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Sept. 10), when they take on Stonehill College in a non-conference match in Easton, Mass. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
