SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2016) - On Saturday, the No. 3/3 LIU Post women's lacrosse team bounced back with a 9-5 win over East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas College at Spartan Field.
Senior attacker
Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) had three goals and three assists for a game-high six-point effort in the contest. Junior attacker
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) notched three goals and an assist for four points.
Tied 5-5 with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation, the Pioneers (10-3, 5-1 ECC) closed out the game on a streak of four unanswered goals to earn the victory. Three of the four tallies occurred in a span of 1:13.
Vagelatos gave LIU Post the lead for good with an unassisted tally at the 13:13 mark. Junior defender/midfielder
Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) and Delaney followed in suit, scoring just 15 seconds apart.
In the first half, the Pioneers and Spartans (8-6, 3-2 ECC) were knotted at 2-all, until a three-goal spurt by the green and gold put the hosts in front 5-2 with 5:50 left. Vagelatos, senior attacker
Jessica Marsh (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder
Ryan McKinney (Downingtown, Pa.) all found the back of the cage for LIU Post in that stretch.
The Pioneers would bring a 5-3 edge into the break, as STAC's Ruth Pluviose (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered an unassisted goal before the half to make it a two-goal game.
Between the pipes, sophomore goaltender
Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) turned aside a game-best eight shots, including seven saves in the latter 30-minute period.
Head Coach
Meghan McNamara and her LIU Post squad continue their four-game road trip Thursday (Apr. 21), when they travel to Manchester, N.H. to face Saint Anselm College in a non-conference showdown at 3 p.m.
