SPARKILL, N.Y. (Mar. 28, 2016) - For the second time in three days, the LIU Post softball team swept St. Thomas Aquinas College, winning by 5-1 and 5-2 counts Monday afternoon at Spartan Field.
Game #1: LIU Post 5, St. Thomas Aquinas 1During the opener, the Pioneers plated a run in five different innings and scattered 14 hits, en route to securing the victory.
In the first, sophomore outfielder
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single, plating freshman catcher
Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.) from third. Seader got the rally started in the frame, lacing a ground-rule double.
Then, in the second, a two-out RBI double by freshman shortstop
Leah Mele (Coram, N.Y.) widened the green and gold's advantage to 2-0.
From there, LIU Post tacked on insurance runs in its half of the fourth, fifth and sixth to make it a 5-0 contest. Senior third baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) and sophomore outfielder
Samantha Marrone (Holbrook, N.Y.) had RBI singles, while freshman first baseman
Ashley Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right.
In the circle, junior pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) recorded her fifth-straight win. She allowed just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Game #2: LIU Post 5, St. Thomas Aquinas 2The Pioneers (15-5, 8-0 ECC) again got the early lead in the nightcap, as Melendez belted her first career home run. A two-run blast in the second gave the green and gold all the run support they needed.
STAC (6-15, 1-7 ECC) managed to cut the deficit in half on a Samantha McDonald (New City, N.Y.) roundtripper, but LIU Post answered with a run in each of the final three innings to put the game away.
Junior second baseman
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) highlighted the effort with a solo shot in the sixth. Seader and senior designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) added RBIs, as well.
Freshman pitcher
Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) went the full seven frames in the decision, yielding five hits and two runs, while surrendering no walks and striking out four.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers are back in action Wednesday (Mar. 30), when they square off with Queens College in an ECC doubleheader in Flushing at 3 p.m.
