BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 4, 2016) - Backed by a five-point day from sophomore forward/midfielder
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.), the No. 5 and second-seeded LIU Post field hockey team defeated No. 6 and third-seeded Stonehill College, 3-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference Championship semifinal contest Friday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Pioneers (14-3), who scored three goals in a span of 3:56 in the second half, advance to their third NE-10 Championship final in the last four seasons.
Miller put the green and gold ahead in the 53rd minute, when she drove past two defenders and beat Skyhawks' (14-5) sophomore goalie Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Mass.) inside the right post for the game's opening goal.
Then, in the 56th minute, the hosts got behind the Stonehill defense for a 2-on-1 rush. From there, sophomore forward/midfielder
Molly Cunha (North Easton, Mass.) played a cross to Miller, who one-timed a shot past Freedman for a 2-0 advantage.
Less than a minute later, the Pioneers added to their lead yet again. Sophomore forward/midfielder
Tarryn Morris (New Cumberland, Pa.) settled a pass from Miller and fired a shot into an open cage, making it a 3-0 game.
Between the pipes, senior goaltender
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) made three saves in the win for LIU Post. Freedman stopped five shots for Stonehill.
Sophomore defender
Grace Ilias (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) also served a key role in holding the Skyhawks off the scoreboard, as she had a defensive save on junior forward Alexandria Sylvia (Brockton, Mass.) in the final minute of the first half.
The Pioneers will now face the winner of the other semifinal between No. 3 and top-seeded Saint Anselm College and fifth-seeded Merrimack College at the highest remaining seed. Please continue to visit
