No. 1 Field Hockey Falls to No. 10 Adelphi in Overtime, 2-1
Box Score
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2016) - On Wednesday, the No. 1 LIU Post field hockey team lost a nailbiting 2-1 overtime decision to 10th-ranked Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt at Motamed Field.
The loss was the first of 2016 for the Pioneers (8-1, 4-1 NE-10), snapping a season-opening eight-game winning streak.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, LIU Post stirred up some late magic to even the score in the second half. With 6:22 left in regulation, sophomore forward/midfielder
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) forced Adelphi (7-3, 4-1 NE-10) junior goalie Amanda Gargiulo (Westbury, N.Y.) to come out of her cage and subsequently tapped a shot into an unguarded net for the equalizer.
Miller then had two more opportunities in the final minutes to put the Pioneers ahead. However, the first of her two attempts hit the post, while the other was turned aside by Gargiulo.
In overtime, LIU Post was awarded a potential game-winning penalty stroke in the 73rd minute. Freshman midfielder
Arantxa Rosainz Caloca (Guadalajara, Mexico) took the attempt, but Gargiulo guessed correctly and kept the game from ending.
That save set up the game-winning goal just 1:50 later from senior forward Lena Pollich (Massapequa, N.Y.), who fired a shot into the cage from the top of the circle.
Senior goalie
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) stopped four shots in the effort for the Pioneers, who held a 12-9 edge in shots in the contest. Gargiulo had six saves for the Panthers.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and her LIU Post squad are back in action Friday (Oct. 7), when they host NE-10 foe Southern New Hampshire University at 2 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville.
