OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2016) - The LIU Post volleyball team rounded out a season-opening 14-match road swing Tuesday with a 3-1 loss (26-24, 18-25, 25-27, 22-25) to East Coast Conference rival New York Institute of Technology at Recreation Hall.

Trailing 7-5 in the first set, the Pioneers (3-10, 0-4 ECC) went on a 9-3 run to take a 14-10 lead, forcing a Bears' (15-2, 4-0 ECC) timeout. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) put down three kills and served an ace in the burst. Freshman middle/right-side hitter Lea Brady (Woodbridge, Va.) added a kill and a block.

Though NYIT later rallied to even the score at 18-all, LIU Post eventually won the game in extra points (26-24) on an attack error by the hosts' Tiffany Verni (Patchogue, N.Y.).

However, the Pioneers dropped the next three sets, including a hard-fought 27-25 decision in the third, to fall to the Bears in four games.

In that third set, LIU Post capitalized on five NYIT errors to grab a 15-11 advantage. Yet, the Bears fought back and tied things up at 21-all, on a Karolina Moderova (Zalesie, Slovakia) kill.

Moderova subsequently added another kill in extra points for the Bears to help secure a 27-25 win.

In the fourth set, NYIT came on late again for the victory. Down 20-19, the Bears used a 6-2 run to take the game by a 25-22 count. Senior middle blocker Rachel Guida (Huntington, N.Y.) and Verni each registered two kills to complete the comeback.

Junior outside/middle/right-side hitter Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) posted a double-double (13 kills, 18 digs) in the loss. Londot (11 kills, 26 digs) had a double-double, as well. Brady collected 10 kills and three blocks. Senior middle hitter Taryn McCullouch (Buena Park, Calif.) totaled nine kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Giulia Genna (Rome, Italy) allocated 41 assists, in addition to recording 10 digs and four blocks.

Head Coach Amanda Ostapow and the Pioneers return to action Thursday (Oct. 6), when they host ECC foe Mercy College in their 2016 home opener at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
