ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2016) - On Friday, the LIU Post women's soccer team worked out a scoreless tie against Roberts Wesleyan College in an East Coast Conference showdown at Roberts Wesleyan Stadium.
In the opening half, the two squads combined for just one shot on goal. Junior back
Alexandra Dencker (Newburgh, N.Y.) put an attempt on net in the sixth minute that was turned aside by Redhawks' (8-3-2, 4-1-1 ECC) freshman keeper Kelsey Brinkel (Rochester, N.Y.).
The stalemate continued in the latter session. However, in the final minutes, freshman midfielder
Medina Mulic (Ridgewood, N.Y.) clanged a near game-winning shot off the post for the Pioneers (8-2-2, 4-1-2 ECC).
The contest would eventually need overtime to decide a victor. In the first extra period, Brinkel and sophomore goalie
Hillevi Eklow (Väröbacka, Sweden) made two saves apiece to keep the game scoreless.
Then, in the second overtime, Eklow stopped a shot from reigning ECC Offensive Player of the Year Bella Mitrevski (Rochester, N.Y.) to preserve the tie.
Eklow finished with four saves on the day for LIU Post, which owned a 13-11 edge in shots in the match. Her counterpart, Brinkel, had six stops for Roberts Wesleyan.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to the pitch Sunday (Oct. 16), when they face ECC opponent Daemen College in an 11 a.m. matinee in Amherst.
