BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2016) - The LIU Post men's and women's basketball teams will be showing their support for the fight against cancer on Saturday, when they host their respective Coaches vs. Cancer games against East Coast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan College.
The women will tip off at 1:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3:30 p.m. Both coaching staffs will leave their dress shoes in the locker room and lace up sneakers for their sideline footwear, as part of the National Association of Basketball Coaches "Suits and Sneakers" week.
The Pioneers are currently collecting contributions for pin-up cards, and all proceeds are being donated to cancer research. Additionally, the LIU Post spirit teams will be walking through the stands on game day with buckets to obtain donations for the worthy cause.
"Coaches vs. Cancer is something very important to the LIU Post women's basketball team. Many of our families have been affected by cancer and we want to do our part to both raise awareness and provide funding for research," Head Coach
Deirdre Moore said. "Fighting cancer by coaching in suits and sneakers quickly brings attention to the cause."
Moore later added: "I look forward to the Coaches vs. Cancer game each season. I believe that the efforts being put forth are helping those in need and adding quality of life for cancer patients in our community."
"Coaches vs. Cancer is one of the most important events of our season," Head Men's Basketball Coach
Erik Smiles said. "Cancer has affected so many people's lives and many members of our basketball program have had friends or family members diagnosed with this horrible disease. This day motivates all of us to go out, raise money and bring awareness to such an important cause."
