BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2015) - On Saturday, the No. 5 LIU Post field hockey team got back on track with a 2-0 win over Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Though the Warriors (3-2, 0-1 NE-10) had the early advantage in penalty corners, the Pioneers (3-1, 1-0 NE-10) kept their opposition at bay and struck for the game's first goal on a corner of their own.
In the 23rd minute, sophomore defender
Grace Ilias (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) flicked a backhander over Merrimack senior goalie Madison Davis (San Jose, Calif.) to stake the hosts to a 1-0 cushion.
LIU Post again capitalized on a penalty corner to double its lead in the second half. This time, sophomore forward
Kaycee Zelkovsky (Lambertville, N.J.) found the back of the cage, as she beat Davis on a shot from the left side of the circle.
The Pioneers dominated the shot count in the contest, 19-5. They also earned 17 penalty corners to the Warriors' 11.
Between the pipes, LIU Post junior goalie
Savanah Cummings (Midlothian, Va.) never faced a shot on goal, but recorded her first shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Davis, collected eight saves.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and the Pioneers are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 23), when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to square off with NE-10 foe Assumption College at 4 p.m.
