BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2015) - On Wednesday afternoon, the No. 9/11 LIU Post women's lacrosse team dispatched No. 16/16 Dowling, 11-4, in an East Coast Conference tilt at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The difference of seven goals is the largest margin of victory over Dowling since 2008 (15-7). With the win, the Pioneers, who have now triumphed in seven straight games, improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in league play.
Trailing 2-1 with under nine minutes left in the opening period, LIU Post scored four unanswered goals in the final 8:36 to take a 5-2 lead into halftime. Red-shirt sophomore attacker
Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) tallied a goal and two assists in the burst. Senior midfielder
Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.) also added one of her game-high four goals on the day.
During the second half, the Pioneers still led by three goals (6-3) just over 10 minutes in. The green and gold then reeled off a 5-1 spurt to pull away from the Golden Lions (8-4, 3-1 ECC). Pierro notched a pair of tallies, both of which occurred on the free position. Junior defender/midfielder
Honey Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) and sophomore defender/midfielder
Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) each collected a goal on an unassisted effort.
Pierro, in addition to scoring four goals, amassed six draws and three ground balls. Delaney and sophomore attacker
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) totaled three points apiece. Douglas chipped in two goals in the victory.
Roche scooped up four ground balls and caused four turnovers. Senior defender
Kali Maxwell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had two caused turnovers and one draw control.
In the cage, two-time reigning ECC Goalie of the Week
Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made seven saves for LIU Post, which nearly doubled up Dowling in shots (29-15). The Pioneers were also an outstanding 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) on clears.
