Women's Swimming Hosts "Laps For Life" Event

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2015) - The LIU Post women's swimming team hosted a "Laps For Life" suicide prevention meet on Sunday, Apr. 19. The Pioneers raised more than $1,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

ASFP Long Island focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide.

"It was great to give back to the community and help raise awareness for such an important cause," said freshman swimmer Jacqueline Tonn (Edmonton, Alberta).

Members of the LIU Post football team also helped the cause, raising awareness and funds for ASFP Long Island.

"Educating people about the prevalence of suicide is vitally important, particularly since the suicide rate among college-aged people is so high," said Head Coach Maureen Travers. "I'm pleased to do anything I can to help raise awareness and let others know there are people and places to reach out for help and support."
