Box Score

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2015) - The No. 8/8 LIU Post women's lacrosse trip wrapped up its visit to the Sunshine State on Sunday with an 11-9 loss to No. 6/9 New Haven at Palm Bay High School.

The Pioneers (3-2) had all the momentum in the opening session, tallying the first three goals, while holding the Chargers (3-0) off the scoreboard for nearly 25 minutes. Junior defender/midfielder Honey Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) gave LIU Post the early edge just 22 seconds in, and dished off assists to Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) for the other two goals.

Freshman goalie Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) stood tall in the cage in the first 30 minutes, stopping six of the eight shots she faced. The green and gold would carry a 5-2 cushion into halftime.

New Haven took over though in the latter stanza. Trailing 6-3 more than five minutes into the period, the Chargers recorded four unanswered goals in a span of 3:43 to grab their first lead (7-6) with 20:03 to go.

Shortly thereafter, sophomore defender/midfielder Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) evened the game at 7-all, on a free-position tally. The marker was her second of the contest.

However, UNH got three unassisted goals from Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass.) in the final 10 minutes of regulation to close it out.

Vagelatos notched three goals in the losing effort. Douglas and sophomore midfielder Connor Bird (Syosset, N.Y.) added two goals apiece. Bird also won five draws. Roche had a goal and two assists for a three-point showing. She scooped up two ground balls, as well. Red-shirt sophomore attacker Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) dished out two assists.

Head Coach Meghan McNamara and the Pioneers return to action Thursday (Mar. 19), when they host Philadelphia in the start of a three-game homestand at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
