ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2015) - On Wednesday night, a Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) lay-up with 17 seconds remaining in regulation sent the LIU Post men's basketball team to a crucial 61-56 triumph over Molloy in East Coast Conference action at Quealy Gymnasium.

On the ensuing possession for the Lions (13-11, 8-8 ECC), sophomore forward Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) attempted to tie the score, but his three-point try was off the mark. From there, senior forward Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) and junior guard Devon McMillan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot a combined 3-of-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the win for the Pioneers (13-11, 8-8 ECC).

Holding a slight 9-7 edge nearly six minutes into the game, LIU Post rattled off an 18-4 run in a nine-minute stretch to extend their lead to double digits (27-11) at the 5:04 mark. Senior guard P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) accounted for a team-high six points in the run. Williams converted a three-point play, while McCann knocked down three attempts from the stripe.

The Pioneers only held a four-point advantage at halftime though, as Molloy closed out the opening stanza on an 11-0 burst. A Maurice Gatson (New York, N.Y.) lay-up made it a 34-30 contest at the break.

In the second half, the Lions went in front, going ahead by as many as five points (44-39) on a Marquardt three with 11:30 to go. The green and gold were also held without a basket for the first 7:52 of the session.

However, LIU Post rallied to re-take the lead on clutch foul shooting. Williams, McMillan (6-6 FT) and sophomore guard Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) combined to nail all eight of its free-throw attempts, as part of a 15-2 run. That gave the visitors a comfortable 54-46 cushion in the final three-and-a-half minutes.

Yet, Molloy stormed back again. This time, an 8-0 response, anchored by a six-point showing in the spurt from senior guard Matt McLeod (Greenlawn, N.Y.), knotted things up at 56-all with 45 seconds left.

Williams got his fifth double-double (18 points, 15 rebounds) in the win. He was 5-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-12 from the stripe. Torres contributed 13 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) grabbed seven boards and dished out two assists. McCann added five points and five rebounds. Junior guard Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, Mass.) pitched in five points and three boards.

Head Coach Erik Smiles and the Pioneers now return home on Saturday (Feb. 21) to host Queens for an ECC and Wounded Warrior Day clash at the Pratt Recreation Center at 3:30 p.m.
