BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2015) - On Wednesday night, the LIU Post men's basketball team trampled Mercy, 85-57, in East Coast Conference action at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers (12-10, 7-7 ECC) put on a shooting display from downtown in the first half, burying their attempts at a 53.8 percent clip (7-of-13), en route to taking a commanding 41-21 lead into the break.
LIU Post started the game on an impressive 24-8 tear over the opening 6:10. Red-shirt freshman guard
Aary Bibens (Bennington, Vt.) accounted for eight of the first 10 points. Junior guard
Chris Orozco (Tenafly, N.J.) followed with the next eight Pioneer points. Fellow junior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) converted on a three-point play to cap it off.
The green and gold got their share of dunks, as well, for the second-straight game. Sophomore forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.) put down a running jam and an alley-oop, while senior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) had a one-handed put-back slam in the first half.
In the latter stanza, the Pioneers did not let up off the gas pedal. Still leading by a 20-point margin (45-25) just over four minutes in, a 9-0 spurt in a stint of 1:30 sealed LIU Post's fourth win in its previous five games. Burns provided five points in the run, via a trey and a lay-up. Junior guard
Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, Mass.) contributed a one-handed dunk on the fast break. The green and gold again dominated the transition game, outscoring the Mavericks (7-14, 2-3 ECC), 22-2, in that category.
For the contest, LIU Post shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field and 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from three-point territory. Dotson finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, five blocks and two steals. Senior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) poured in 16 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, in 19 minutes off the bench. Burns totaled 11 points and six assists. Bibens chipped in a 10-point showing. Orozco had nine points, five boards and a pair of steals.
